Rufus and Kayla

Thank you PAWS. People occasionally have circumstances hit them that make it really tough to afford vet care for a beloved pet. Here’s Kayla’s story about saving the life of her buddy Rufus.

Kayla didn’t hesitate to rush Rufus to an emergency vet when her beloved dog suddenly fell ill. There, she discovered that Rufus had cystine bladder stones and needed surgery to remove the blockage. Despite the daunting cost of $3000, Kayla footed the bill herself so Rufus could enjoy his entire life ahead—he was only 3—and simply because Rufus was her best friend.

Unfortunately, some diseases have a high rate of recurrence, and cystine stones are among them. When Rufus showed signs of a bladder infection less than a year later, Kayla immediately contacted a vet, only to receive bad news: Rufus would need surgery again. Two costly procedures in less than a year put a strain on Kayla’s finances. That’s when the vet mentioned PAWS and suggested applying for financial assistance.

This was Kayla’s first time hearing about PAWS, but the application process was quick and smooth. Rufus underwent surgery and showed amazing resilience. Now, he’s enjoying life with Kayla and his doggie brother Enzo, with whom he has been inseparable since birth.

Although conditions like cystine stones have no cure, preventive measures exist, and Kayla now diligently ensures Rufus follows a strict prescription diet, takes medications, and drinks plenty of water to prevent the stones from forming again.

In her own words Kayla said: “Thank you PAWS for helping us, and letting me see the light in all the darkness that was surrounding us in those times. You brought so much relief to both of us and I will never forget your kindness in some of the worst moments of my life. Rufus is nearly 5 now and living his absolute best life, all thanks to PAWS and the vet team at EVAH-Hamilton. “
