How we helped Kermit, the Cat with veterinary bill assistance

Kermit, the Cat

Kermit was struggling to walk and Sue didn’t know what to do with herself. It started gradually; what she assumed to be an old cat’s quirky gait turned quickly into something of concern.

Despite the struggles of trying to keep a roof over their heads and living on disability, Sue always made sure Kermit was well-fed and cared for. Yet here she was, looking into the eyes of her sweet kitty that she knew was ill and wondering what the problem could be.

Searching for Answers

Immediately, she started looking for ways to take care of Kermit. First, she did some research on her own and found no straightforward answers. As she still didn’t know anything for certain, she turned to calling the professionals.

Would Kermit be needing surgery? Did he have a tumor? How much would this cost? These questions rushed through Sue’s mind as she was thinking of next steps. She was looking into everything to no avail. After calling a couple of places, she quickly realized she simply couldn’t afford to make Kermit healthier again. He was an 11 years old tabby, already having issues walking, and only getting sicker by the day.

Sue was at her wits end when professionals suggested putting Kermit down at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). However, She didn’t have the heart to do that.

Sue began telling everyone she knew about her situation. Fortunately, her brother heard about East Village Animal Hospital that provided care for low-income pet owners. Sue did not hesitate to call them. They redirected her to PAWS Canada where she put in an application. This was truly her last hope so she had her fingers crossed and hoped for the best.

A Glimmer of Hope

Luckily for Kermit and Sue, their application got approved and PAWS was able to subsidize their vet bills. Things were starting to look up for them as Sue realized this wasn’t the last chapter in Kermit’s book.

Being diagnosed with late onset diabetes was heart-shattering news, but Kermit had already gotten this far. Sue certainly wasn’t going to give up on him now. Diabetes was definitely a sad discovery, but it didn’t mean the end and in Kermit’s case, he could get treatment. This meant insulin while focusing on a proper diet.

“What a relief.  I had worried that Kermit’s condition might be far more serious.  I had even feared that I might return home with an empty cat-carrier,” Sue recounted.

Thanks to Sue’s resilience and PAWS reliable assistance, Kermit is now doing well and with a positive prognosis!
